  1.      In the chapter on the wheel it will be shown that 
  2. transport without wheels had played a big role before the 
  3. wheel, some of which was by sledge, over both snow and bogs. 
  4. Much of it was by pack animal‚Äîwoman being the first pack 
  5. animal. Most wheel-less transport in the past, however, was by 
  6. river and by sea, a fact that is today as richly expressed as ever 
  7. in the location and form of the great cities of the world. Some 
  8. writers have observed that man‚Äôs oldest beast of burden was 
  9. woman, because the male had to be free to run interference for 
  10. the woman, as ball-carrier, as it were. But that phase belonged 
  11. to the pre-wheel stage of transport, when there was only the 
  12. tractless waste of man the hunter and food-gatherer. Today, 
  13. when the greatest volume of transport consists in the moving 
  14. of information, the wheel and the road are undergoing
